Is the Dodge Hellephant Street Legal

It`s dazzling work, but what about those of us struggling in our garages? Incredibly, Mopar says the engine was configured for use in a road application, or to be precise, «the engine assembly and kit is designed to be installed in on-road and off-road vehicles prior to 1976.» In other words, if the car in question is exempt from the standard smog rules that apply to model years after 1976, the Hellephant is technically legal on the road. Now let`s move on to the bad news. Mopar claims that the Hellephant 426 Supercharged HEMI V8 engine is not legal on controlled polluting vehicles or vehicles approved for highway use. That simply means days on the track or off-road adventures: if you want something with stupid power that`s road legal, you should probably «settle for» a 797hp Challenger Hellcat Redeye. The claimed 1,000 horsepower of the Hellephant engine, outperforming the Hellcat by nearly 300 horsepower, also receives 950 lb-ft of torque — almost as much as the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty, which reached 1,000 lb-ft to surpass torque wars between U.S. trucks. But there are limits, but not in the realm of power: FCA guarantees that the Hellephant is «designed to be installed in pre-1976 on-road and off-road vehicles,» and a footnote on Mopar`s website reminds everyone that it is «not legal for pollutant-controlled vehicles or vehicles registered for highway use.» In addition to custom road cars, this engine will almost certainly find its place among racers. The sturdy construction, the crazy power, the relatively lightweight all-aluminum construction – seems like the perfect solution for a modernized 9-second tow truck, don`t you think? To give an idea of what could be done with the Hellephant, Dodge also unveiled its Super Charger concept, a heavily modified version of a 1968 Dodge Charger. 2.5 inches lower than usual, with massive fender flares, an extended wheelbase, exhaust tips in the taillights, and a true Mopar catalog of modern parts, it was never designed to be road legal. But it should definitely be an absolute monster.

And if the crate of hell is a clue, then that`s exactly where the Hellephant is headed. Like its successor, the Hellcrate is intended for off-road and pre-1976 vehicles, and so far we`ve seen it installed in a number of classic dragsters and road cars. The «Hellephant» 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine is a specially designed gearbox engine. Mopar Fiat Chrysler simply announced pre-orders and pricing on Friday, with the supercharged 426 Hemi Box engine getting an MSRP of $29,995 and the associated engine kit costing $2,265. That`s compared to the 707-horsepower Hellcat engine, which costs just over $20,000. The Hellephant is far from an April Fool`s joke, even if it sounds like it – first because it`s the end of April, and secondly because this thing debuted in October of last year. Last November, Mopar shook up the automotive world by unveiling its latest Mopar Crate HEMI engine® at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. The 1,000 hp «Hellephant» 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine was the first 1,000 hp boxed engine kit from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM). With the announcement, the internet was inflamed with confusing information about the new engine.

We reached out to Mopar for an official comment on the situation, here`s what Mopar had to say. Pre-orders are now available, with the hellephant priced at $29,995. That may sound like a lot — you can get a brand new charger for less, albeit with a fraction of the power — but for the power levels we`re talking about here, it`s incredibly affordable. The engine package costs $2,265 more. First, let`s talk about the origins of the Hellephant 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine in its current form. The Hellephants aluminium 426 block was created in collaboration between Mopar and a company called Tool Engineering International, TEI for short. It`s not a block currently shared with another engine in the FCA lineup, and according to our sources, the 426 Hellephant shares nothing but displacement with the upcoming 7.0L 426 Hemi V8. The Hellephant also has a modular iron camshaft with a high lifting profile.

The intake valves are measured at 54.3 mm, while the exhaust valves are 42 mm.
