Social media marketing is the process of promoting a business and its products or services on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Businesses in the Philippines – including micro and small businesses – use social media platforms for customer inquiries and after-sales support. The privacy provisions are found in Chapter Two of the Civil Code of the Philippines under Human Relations, where Article 26 states: «Every person shall respect the dignity, personality, privacy and peace of mind of his neighbors and others.» Although it is not considered a criminal offense, it has identified acts that can give rise to a cause of action for damages and other remedies, and where social media can be used as a means and place to commit the crime. This includes interfering with or disrupting the privacy or family relationships of others, inciting to alienate another person from friends, angering or humiliating another person because of their religious beliefs, inferior position in life, place of birth, physical defect or any other personal condition. Location-based services help you connect and interact with other people and businesses in your area. Foursquare is an example you can also use to recommend or rate businesses in this space. They also suggest that as long as Filipinos remain active on social media, Filipino consumers remain open to marketing communications – targeted messaging, advertising, and personalized content. This leaves the doors open for Filipino companies to attract potential customers to the online market and increase sales. How can you, as a company, take advantage of this opportunity? What are the things to keep in mind when you put your business online? Start by listing topic ideas for your social media platforms. While your ultimate goal is to promote your business, you don`t have to constantly share sales-oriented content. From time to time, you can post something funny, useful, or educational to grab your audience`s attention. If there`s one thing the pandemic has done to Filipinos, it`s that they avoid physical interactions. This has increased the need to consume content, and videos are at the top of the list.
According to a report by Cisco, video content will account for 82% of all online content by 2022. This shows how important it is to use video content on social media. Some of the most preferred types of videos include short video content – Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories, and TikTok.But while businesses should consider them as part of their social media marketing strategy, it`s still important to focus on one (or two) platform(s) first. The real purpose of the Internet and the Web is to improve people`s access to information. Social media is created primarily for communication, often interpersonal communication. It integrates into users` lives and plays many roles, entertains, supports friendships and moderates debates. Facebook identifies members of an extended online community as «friends,» although the social connection can often be more casual, such as a classmate or a «friend of a friend.» For example, a Facebook profile that makes the user`s friend base visible to others offers a way to create and represent the person`s social sphere. Facebook also connects its users to others in the same «network» or, for example, to a university or workplace. Social networking platforms encourage users to post and share personal information as part of their online social interactions.
There are two available jurisdictions decided by the Supreme Court of the Philippines that deal with privacy in relation to social media: The Supreme Court has issued a ruling stating that nothing on Facebook is ever private, even those marked as private never really escape public scrutiny, including unintended audiences. The decision stems from the case involving photos of two underage STC students posted on Facebook. The photos, uploaded by one of her friends, showed students drinking and smoking in a bar wearing only underwear and wearing only underwear on a street. The photos were shown to school officials by one of the girls` Facebook friends, prompting them to ban students from marching at their graduation rites in March 2012. According to STC, the students violated the school`s code of conduct. Nevertheless, privacy is less understood in the context of social media and has led to an increase in data breaches in online spaces, particularly social media. News reports and anecdotal evidence have shown that many privacy breaches are committed against women and girls. The different platforms for publishing and republishing information on social media make it difficult to control and regulate the personal data that women wish to share.
The viral spread of private images and videos is a common problem on social media. Women and girls are being punished for this act without understanding the interdependence of technology, privacy and violence against women. In this context, the FMA is undertaking a thematic mandate to understand privacy in social media in the context of the Philippines. The study highlights the decision of the Supreme Court of the Philippines in the St. Theresa`s College Cebu case. [8] The case comes from students at a Catholic school who were not allowed to participate in the final exercise because of their provocative Facebook posts. The document analysed the case and identified the legal, political and social implications of the decision. The availability of multiple platforms to post and republish information, and the speed at which information is shared, have compromised women`s privacy. The viral spread of private images and videos is a common problem on social media, along with unwanted comments, sexual solicitation, obscenity, and harassment.
A women-centred perspective on privacy is needed, because only with such a perspective can we begin to assess how the proliferation of social media has affected the difficult situation of privacy. One of the key governance challenges is the need to strengthen privacy and security protections that benefit women and enable them to better engage online. There must be a principles-based ecosystem that protects the privacy of individuals, but at the same time is fluid enough to ensure that the exchange of information across borders or within the country is not hindered. Doing the groundwork before you start is crucial for a successful social media presence. Develop your social media strategy to: Social media users love to watch, share, and comment on videos. In fact, video posts on Facebook pages have the highest average engagement rate (9.26%) in the Philippines, according to We Are Social Report 2020. Some social media channels are better than others at achieving a specific goal, mainly due to their characteristics and the demographics of their audience. Social media[1] serves as the Internet for the majority of Filipino online users.
More than 80% of the Filipino internet population uses social media. In Universal McCann`s 2008 Wave 3 Social Media Study, the Philippines had the highest social media penetration among Internet users at 83%, compared to the global average of 58%. [2] Among the available social media platforms, Filipino internet users prefer Facebook over Twitter, Tumbler, Pinterest and others, with 92% having a profile and women being the most active users. [3] For Filipino internet users, Facebook is the easiest and cheapest to access. Mobile networks in the Philippines offer it for free as a plan for a data plan or as an incentive to subscribe to their network. [4] Here`s an example: LinkedIn is a business- and employment-focused service. It`s one of the easiest platforms for making business-to-business deals, announcements, and more. You can link them to your website directly from your messages. When you`re on Instagram, business pages with 10,000 likes and more can add a swipe up option to their Instagram story that makes it easy for users to visit their page. If you have an ecommerce site, you can easily share your page by redirecting customers who want to buy your products from the social media site to your website! Blogs are online diaries with thoughts, observations, promotions, links, images, and videos. Blogs are usually public. They allow readers to comment on posts and interact with you.
You can host them internally or through a blogging platform that provides the software and website hosting. Some examples of free blogging tools are Blogger and WordPress Getting to know someone through social media and starting a relationship is a natural thing. However, this could become a problem (or even an involvement in crime) when this healthy relationship ends. The Asia Foundation has a long history of working with organizations trying to advance through technology and sponsored the first Philippine Blog Summit in May 2005. Five years later, in the rapidly changing social media landscape, we helped civil society organizations use this technology to reach the general public – in this case, human rights work in the Philippines. Human rights organizations learned how to use the popularity of online social networking sites to advance their social and political campaigns and gain public support, and received training on «digital activism.» This focused on the use of social networking sites (Facebook), blogs (WordPress), microblogging (Twitter), web tools and applications (Google Docs), live streaming, and mobile activism.
