Least ConcernThe least worrying level of conservation is the lowest. One of the least worrisome species is the one that has a widespread and abundant population. Humans are a less worrisome species, along with most pets such as dogs and cats. Many wild animals, such as pigeons and house flies, are also classified as unhazardd. Almost threatenedA near-endangered species is a species likely to qualify for an endangered category in the near future. Many species of violets native to the tropical jungles of South America and Africa, for example, are almost threatened. They have healthy populations, but their rainforest habitat is disappearing at a rapid rate. People cut down huge areas of rainforest for development and timber. Many purple species are likely to be threatened.
Definitions of the three threatened categories (endangered, endangered and threatened with extinction) are based on five criteria: population reduction rate, geographic distribution, population size, population restrictions and probability of extinction. Threatened categories have different thresholds for these criteria. If the population and range of the species decreases, the species becomes more threatened.1) Population reduction rateA species is classified as endangered if its population has declined between 30 and 50 percent. This decline is measured over 10 years or three generations of the species, whichever is longer. A generation is the period between the birth of an animal and the time when it can reproduce. Mice can reproduce when they are about a month old. Mouse populations are usually tracked over a period of 10 years. The generation of an elephant lasts about 15 years. Thus, elephant populations are measured over periods of 45 years.
A species is at risk if its population has declined by at least 50% and the cause of the decline is known. Habitat loss is the most well-known main cause of population decline. A species is classified as endangered even if its population has declined by at least 30% and the cause of the decline is not known. For example, a new unknown virus could kill hundreds or even thousands of individuals before being identified.2) Geographic distributionA species is at risk if its «extent of occurrence» is estimated to be less than 20,000 square kilometres (7,722 square miles). An extent of occurrence is the smallest area that could contain all sites in a species` population. If all members of a species could survive in a single area, the size of that area is the extent of the occurrence of the species. A species is also classified as endangered if its «area of occupancy» is estimated to be less than 2,000 square kilometres (772 square miles). An area of occupancy is the place where a certain population of this species resides. This area is often a breeding or nesting site in a species area. There is data from the United States showing a correlation between human populations and endangered and endangered species.
Using species data from the Endangered Species Economics and Management Database (DEMES) and the period during which the Endangered Species Act (ESA) existed from 1970 to 1997, a table was created that indicates a positive relationship between human activity and endangerment. [9] Endangered species means any species threatened with extinction due to a sudden and rapid decline in its population or the loss of critical habitat. In the past, any plant or animal species threatened with extinction could be described as an endangered species. The need for separate definitions of «endangered» and «threatened» species has led to the development of different categorization systems, each containing definitions and criteria according to which a species can be classified according to its risk of extinction. As a general rule, a number of criteria must be analyzed before a species can be placed in either category. Currently, 1,556 endangered species are protected by government laws. However, this approximation does not take into account threatened species that are not covered by legislation such as the Endangered Species Act. According to NatureServe`s global conservation status, about thirteen percent of vertebrates (excluding marine fish), seventeen percent of vascular plants, and six to eighteen percent of fungi are considered endangered. [17]: 415 In total, between seven and eighteen percent of known animals, fungi and plants in the United States are threatened with extinction.
[17]: 416 This total is significantly higher than the number of species protected in the United States under the Endangered Species Act. Since humanity began hunting to support itself, overhunting and fishing have been a significant and dangerous problem. Of all the species that have disappeared due to human interference, the dodo, the carrier pigeon, the great auk, the Tasmanian tiger and the Steller`s manatee are some of the best known examples; with the bald eagle, grizzly bear, American bison, eastern wood wolf and sea turtle, which were poached to extinction. Many started as food sources considered necessary for survival, but became the target of sport.
Due to great efforts to prevent extinction, the bald eagle or Haliaeetus leucocephalus is now on the Red List under the category of «Least Concern». [18] A current example of overhunting a species can be seen in the oceans, as populations of some whales have declined sharply. Large whales such as blue whales, bowhead whales, fin whales, grey whales, sperm whales and humpback whales are among the eight whales currently on the endangered list. Measures have been taken to try to reduce whaling and increase the population. Measures include banning whaling in U.S. waters, forming the CITES Treaty, which protects all whales, and forming the International Whaling Commission (IWC). But although all these movements have been introduced, countries like Japan continue to hunt and harvest whales under the pretext of «scientific purposes». [19] Overhunting, climate change and habitat loss result in the landing of species from the endangered list. This could mean that extinction rates could rise sharply in the future. The first man in danger was the only officer who put his horse in front of the row of mules walking and falling. An endangered species is a type of organism threatened with extinction. Species are threatened for two main reasons: habitat loss and loss of genetic variation.
